The Last Rhino

This was the first painting of my endangered animal series. I had been struggling for a bit to articulate on paper what I was feeling. There were quite possibly hundreds of paintings that came before this one that ended up in the garbage. Frustrated, I took some time off and painted a days worth of circles. I'm not kidding. It's a very zen practice; breathing, moving, painting and most importantly not planning or thinking. While I was sleeping that same night I knew how I wanted to paint this rhino (the magic of meditation and sleep). The shadows became an important metaphor for their fragile existence.
